Ok Tedi mine in PNG allocates 90 million US dollars to protect river

OK Tedi Mining Limited or OTML will spend an estimated 90 million US dollars in the next 20 months under its environmental management programme to minimise mining impact on a nearby river in Papua New Guinea.

The Western province miner has brought in a dredger from Dubai bringing the number of dredgers to two at its Bige dredging site near the mine.

OTML's Bige projects manager, Derrick Kelly, told The National newspaper that OTML's second dredge was part of its commitment to make the environment a lot safer.

As part of the mine waste tailings project initiated in 1996 sulphur from the tailings had been piped from the new tailings processing plant at Folomian to Bige to be safely stored in the pyrite concentrate storage pits, located near the river.
