The cathedral dean who will lead commemorations for Queen Elizabeth in Christchurch believes residents remember her fondly.
A memorial service for the late monarch will be held in the Garden City this evening.
The service at the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral will be in the Anglican tradition, but will also involve mana whenua and the Defence Force.
Reverend Lawrence Kimberley says there was a mutual affection between Christchurch residents and the Queen.
"A lot of the people that we connect with at the Cathedral certainly have quite a warm spot for the royal family and especially for Queen Elizabeth and I think she did for us as well," he said.
Cathedral leaders are hoping the commemorations will be accessible for as many residents as possible.
Kimberley says provisons have been made should the cathedral's capacity not accommodate everyone.
"The risk is that our building isn't quite big enough to hold everyone and that means we're also livestreaming it and the livestream link will be available on our website, as well as the service sheet", he said.
"So we want to make it as accessible to everyone as possible."
The ceremony begins at 5pm.
Condolence books will be available during the Cathedral's opening hours until after the Civic Service.
