David Noel Roigard, an Opunake farmer, has denied killing his son Aaron Roigard in June last year, and also denies eight charges of theft in a special relationship.

The Crown alleges Mr Roigard killed his son when he visited him in June to sign papers for a farm he thought he was buying.

Aaron Roigard, a 27-year-old father of two, has not been seen since and a body has never been found.

David Roigard's defence team said the evidence against him was circumstantial and that it needed to be proven that a death has taken place.

The trial has been set down for four weeks and is being heard by Justice Paul Heath and a jury of 10 women and two men.
