The charms included parts of a snake's body, and featured the fangs of a Thai adder.

The man, who had arrived from Australia, told airport staff the lucky charms were attached to his metal detector, which he used while panning for gold.

But a Ministry for Primary Industries spokesperson said he was not allowed to bring them into the country.

The passenger chose for the ministry to hold the items, and he collected them when he left the country five days later.
