A backpackers' hostel in the flood-ravaged West Coast town of Westport has been gutted by fire.
Firefighters were called at 2.30am to Bazil's Backpackers Hostel & Surf School in Russell Street.
The single-storey building was well alight when crews arrived.
Chief fire officer Alan Kennedy said guests and staff all got out safely and no-one was injured.
Kennedy said the fire did not appear to be flooding related and no flood evacuees were staying at the hostel.
While the building is still standing it has suffered extensive damage and may need to be destroyed, he said.
At least 30 firefighters and seven fire trucks were called in from several West Coast stations.
The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
