Forum doesn't rule out role in monitoring French Polynesia election

13:48 pm on 25 November 2004

The Pacific Islands Forum has confirmed it is holding talks with the French Government and groups in French Polynesia over the crisis there.

There have been calls from the Pacific for the Forum to play more of a role in the seven-week-long impasse between rival political groups in the territory.

A Forum spokesman, Ulafala Aiavao, says it has been in contact with parties in both the territory and in France, as an "interested neighbour" in the Pacific.

But he says it's impossible to say what has been discussed, including whether the Forum has offered help with monitoring forthcoming elections.

We're not in a position to detail the content of consultations that we may have had with France. It would be premature at this time.
