New Zealand's largest retailer, The Warehouse Group, has appointed Nick Grayston from American retailer Sears as its new chief executive.

British-born Mr Grayston holds a senior leadership position with the Chicago-based Sears Holding and will join the red shed chain in December.

He has previously held senior executive positions with the Foot Locker retail chain and other large retailers in Canada and Europe, including Laura Ashley, Woolworths and Marks & Spencer.

The Warehouse chairman Ted Van Arkel said Mr Grayston had many years of experience and would be focused on delivering value to shareholders.

"We believe that he is able to see the opportunities and also the online business has been his expertise and we'll continue to develop that and drive that harder as we move forward," he said.

Mr Van Arkel said the current chief executive, Mark Powell, would stay on until early 2016.
