To top it off, Australia triumphed in the men's team cycling pursuit for the first time since the 2004 Athens Olympics, defeating Great Britain in the final.
That gives Australia 18 gold medals, beating the tally reached at the 2004 Athens Olympics and in Tokyo three years ago.
Australia also managed two podium finishes in athletics.
Matthew Denny became the first Australian to win an Olympic medal in the men's discus with a bronze.
Jemima Montag and Rhydian Cowley claimed bronze in the mixed relay race walk marathon.
