The designer of the Red Peak flag says the process for choosing a design has been odd and people have been unsure how to participate in it.
Special legislation was passed in Parliament to allow the Red Peak flag to be added to four flags chosen by officials in a referendum later this year.
Its designer Aaron Dustin said the surge of interest in his design was stunning.
"All of a sudden it started getting shared and people were creating petitions and then it just literally steam-rolled by itself," Mr Dustin said.
"From there we were creating Facebook pages to deal with the interest and got this huge surge and it must have been about five days of madness really where the whole country seemed to get behind it."
