Two injured after car goes up in flames following Canterbury crash

A car caught fire and two people are injured following a two-vehicle crash on Canterbury's Banks Peninsula this morning.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said firefighters were called to the crash on State Highway 75, near Akaroa, at 7.15am.

The spokesperson said a car was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived but the occupants had managed to escape.

Hato Hone St John said two people with moderate injuries were taken to Christchurch Hospital.

The road has since reopened.
