The Waitangi National Trust has put out a proposal for any developers who may be interested in building a new hotel on the site.

The Trust's estate, which comprise more than 500 hectares of land including the 18ha Treaty Grounds, already have a golf course and another hotel on them.

The Trust's chief executive Greg McManus said any new development would be adjacent to the golf club and not near the historic treaty grounds.

He said the concept's been put out to developers but they had yet to hear from any interested parties.

Mr McManus said at this stage there are no firm plans and any community consultation would happen if they were to make it to the resource consent stage.

He said there is a major shortage of accommodation in the Bay of Islands and a new hotel could bring employment benefits to the area.
