The council will replace the Teachers Council as the disciplinary and registration body for teachers.

Many teachers are unhappy they are losing the right to elect any members of the Education Council.

Education Minister Hekia Parata will choose all the council's members and said she expected to name them in April.

At least five members of the council must be registered teachers with current practising certifications.
