Guam Power Authority pursues alternative energy projects

The Guam Power Authority intends to fast track a deep sea cooling project to provide air conditioning for a tourist area.

Also known as "seawater air conditioning system," the process uses cold water pumped from the depths of the ocean to cool adjacent buildings.

The Marianas Variety newspaper quotes John Benavente, the general manager for consolidated utility services, as saying the Authority is actively pursuing the use of alternative energy alternative sources such as deep sea cooling to lessen its fuel costs

Benaventa said the Authority is also considering solar and wind power projects.

He told the paper he hoped that 10 to 15 percent of the island's energy load will be generated by alternative energy by the next decade.
