Obama to visit Australia in November

11:11 am on 13 September 2011

US President President Barack Obama will visit Australia in November, the White House has announced.

Mr Obama has been invited by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard to mark the 60th anniversary of ANZUS security alliance between the US, Australia and New Zealand.

The president's plans to visit Australia last year were cancelled twice because of his plans to overhaul the healthcare system and a huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The visit will take place during a trip that includes Mr Obama's duties as host of the APEC forum in Hawaii and an East Asia summit in Indonesia.

The White House statement did not say where in Australia the president would go but there has been speculation he will attend the President's Cup golf tournament at Royal Melbourne between the United States and an international team which begins at the same time.

The president will be in Australia on 16 and 17 November.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says there is an open invitation for the Mr Obama to come to New Zealand, but it's highly unlikely he will do so in November.
