Tokelau's government has agreed to build a single airstrip on one of the territory's three atolls.
The General Fono last week agreed to the project, which New Zealand has committed to fund.
A government statement said it marked the conclusion of 45 years of studies and planning for air services.
Tokelau is only reachable by boat from Samoa.
The decision is notable because infrastructure is usually replicated across all three atolls to avoid favouring any particular village.
No location for the airstrip has been named yet.
