State Highway One south of Kaikoura has re-opened after a rock the size of two basketballs hit a car when a slip came down yesterday.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said heavy rain triggered small rockfalls near the Parititahi Tunnel.

It said geotechnical advisers inspected the area and containers had been put in place to protect traffic from any further rockfall.
