Two time world cup runners-up Tahiti have been humbled 12-4 by Italy in the opening match of the FIFA beach soccer world cup in Paraguay.
The Tiki Toa had gone into the match with high hopes given the Italians had only placed fourth at the last world cup, but a quick-fire goal from Gabriele Gori in under two minutes, set the tone for the rest of the match with the Italian going on to score four more goals including a stunning free kick to end the match.
His colleague Emmanuele Zurlo also netted four of his own in what was a goal feast of a match for the Italians.
The Tahitians, however, will be bitterly disappointed with the result having scored only four of the whopping 42 shots they struck on target. Especially considering their European opposition only hit 20.
Raimana Li Fung Kuee, Ariihau Teriitau and Gervais Chan-Kat were the goal scores for the Oceania Champions with Li Fung Kuee bagging a brace.
The Tiki Toa's next match is against Mexico on Saturday at 4.15pm in Asuncion, which is 8.15am on Sunday in New Zealand.
