Canterbury District Health Board has confirmed that there has been a death at an aged care facility in Christchurch in the wake of Monday's earthquakes.

The DHB says on Tuesday morning that it was notified about the death which occurred at a resthome owned by the Oceania group.

Oceania group chief executive Geoff Hipkins says the man fell during the 6.3-magnitude quake on Monday afternoon at Resthaven in St Albans and became unconscious.

Mr Hipkins says the man was seen by a doctor and seemed to recover, but died during the night. Family members have been informed.

The DHB says a small number of other resthome residents suffered minor injuries.

Six resthomes have minor structural damage and water, power and sewerage problems as a result of Monday's tremors.
