West Auckland pet owners are being warned to watch out for signs of poisoning in their animals after a flock of stupefied mallard ducks apparently dropped out of the sky in the area.

Fish and Game says the eight ducks had to be euthanised after they were discovered near death on a street in Glen Eden.

And a post mortem showed they'd ingested wheat laced with a pest control product called Alphachloralose.

John Dyer from Fish and Game says while the poison is approved for use in some cases, users aren't registered so its difficult to track the product back, but it's up to the user to make sure they don't accidentally poison other animals.
