Councils in Hamilton, Christchurch and Dunedin are considering hiring debt collectors to to obtain payment of unpaid parking fines.
Auckland Council is already trialling this approach and reports a 50% increase in people paying some of the $1.7 million it is owed in parking fines.
Auckland Transport says the trial also avoided the need to send the debts to the courts.
Dunedin City Council is owed $1.6 million and regulatory services manager Kevin Thompson says he is keen to look at any approach that will help get the money.
