Solomons copra industry exploring alternative uses for coconut crop

10:13 am on 25 August 2004

In Solomon Islands, the need to diversify the uses of coconut is becoming apparent as copra trading is declining in the world market.

Solomon Islands copra industry will highlight this need on the international coconut day celebrations on September 4th.

A spokesman for the Commodity Exports Marketing Authority, Moses Pelomo, says copra as a trading commodity is low in value, bulky and faces dwindling demand.

He says faced with that scenario the industry must find other ways to develop other products from the coconut.

Copra, meantime, is still the main income earner for rural people in Solomon Islands.
