Study shows arthritis sufferers need to get help early

Arthritis New Zealand says people showing signs of rheumatoid arthritis need to get help earlier so it can be better managed through life.

Hundreds of New Zealand sufferers participated in a global survey aimed at educating the public about the condition.

Arthritis New Zealand chief executive Sandra Kirby says about 30% of the New Zealanders who contributed to the study have disease management plans.

She says these are important, because if rheumatoid arthritis is not managed properly, it can cause permanent joint destruction, disability and loss of work.

Ms Kirby says early detection and treatment won't be a cure but will make the disease more controllable.

She says early signs include stiffness in hands, knees or feet.
