New Zealand cricket coach Mike Hesson is a meticulous planner, but coming up with a plan to counter the West Indies in a World Cup quarter-final requires a few contingencies.

The Black Caps have enjoyed plenty of success at the Wellington venue, winning 15 of the 22 completed matches they've played there.

They've also won all three of the one day matches they've played against the Windies there, although the last of those was five years ago.

Last summer the two sides drew a five-match series in New Zealand 2-2, with one match abandoned.

At this World Cup the Windies have been a mixed bag, beating fellow quarter-finalists Pakistan but losing to Ireland, and it's that unpredictability that has Hesson worried.

"They're dangerous, when you think that they're down they come out and one of their players plays an explosive innings or bowls a spell that can take you out of the game."

"Sometimes it's easier to play a side that's a bit more predictable, whereas the West Indies, on their day they're exceptional."
