The Canterbury rugby union has made an official complaint to the police over the racial abuse of a Fijian player during a match on Sunday.
Police have today confirmed they have received a complaint from the union's general manager of community rugby relating to the senior club final between Christchurch and Lincoln University.
Saka Ace, who plays for Christchurch, asked to be taken off the field during the game, because of racial taunting from the sidelines.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said police were assessing the complaint and will speak to Aca and work with the union to identify the person or persons involved.
In a joint statement the union, the university and the Christchurch club said the abuse was believed to have come from a Lincoln University supporter, or supporters, on the embankment.
