14:00 pm on 12 June 2008

Solomon Islands National Council of Women welcomes the appointment of the country's first female judge.

Nkemdilim Izuako of Nigeria has been appointed a High Court judge.

The council's general secretary, Ella Kauhue, says Judge Izuako is a role model for many women.

"It has reflected a lot of things to this country because she is a woman and in the Solomon Islands for a very very long time its been regarded as a field only for men. Its been very very difficult for a woman to get that kind of position."

Ella Kauhue says although there are no women in the current Solomons parliament, Judge Izuako's appointment will help inspire women to run at the next general election.
