Crockett in a league of his own

11:38 am on 6 July 2018

Another chapter will be added to the Crusaders - Highlanders rivalry when they play in Christchurch on Friday tonight.

Blue and gold, and black and red supporters will line the stands at the newly-renamed Wyatt Crockett Stadium.

Super Rugby's first double centurion, Wyatt Crockett, can't quite believe what he has managed to accomplish since making his debut in 2006.

"I was lucky to get one game and just stoked with that. To be here all this time later is pretty special. I'm very grateful to the Crusaders, who have been very loyal to me and given me the opportunity to continue to come back and keep playing for the team that I love."

The Crusaders are recognising the occasion by renaming their home ground after the former Nelson College old boy.

A gesture which means a lot to Crockett.

"Just shows how much the Crusaders care about their players. I remember on my [150th Super Rugby match Crusaders chief executive Hamish Riach] organised [for] me to have a box for my family, and for this they've renamed the stadium, which is pretty cool - and something I'll probably take some memorabilia away from and show the grandkids."

The Crusaders may be top of the table, but they lost 25-17 to the Highlanders in Dunedin in March.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson said tonight's game would mean a lot to Cantabrians.

"These games are really special. [The Highlanders are] good mates for a lot of the boys and coaching group. There's a lot on it for a lot of reasons. It's quite obvious they're playing for a position on the [points table] and so are we.

Another former Crusader, Aaron Mauger, used to see the Highlanders as the enemy, but now views the game through a different lens - as he is the Highlanders head coach.

"Oh, it's a big challenge, isn't it? They're a team that's sitting on top of the table for a good reason at the moment - they've been pretty clinical all year and consistent. It's a great challenge for our side. We're really excited. I'm excited about leading the 'Landers up there to have a good crack at them."

However, Mauger paid tribute to his former teammate and shared a heartfelt message.

"Obviously, it's a big night for Wyatt Crockett. Two-hundred games is a massive achievement, so from the Highlanders, we congratulate him on that achievement. He's been a very loyal servant and a fantastic player for the Crusaders. Well done, Crocky, on your 200th."

Crockett has been named on the bench and will have to bide his time before he clocks up his double century tonight.
