New Caledonia dengue outbreak still not contained

16:04 pm on 13 February 2013

A dengue outbreak in New Caledonia has led to nearly 500 more people catching the virus this month.

The health authorities say 965 people were diagnosed with dengue in January, bringing the season's tally to nearly 1,900.

In December, a 55-year-old woman died of dengue.

People are advised to eliminate the breeding grounds of the disease-carrying mosquitos.

There is no vaccine against the disease but there are hopes one will be developed within two years.
