Police have confirmed that two people died following a crash between a bus and a truck on State Highway 1 near Marton on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were called to the crash which was under a rail bridge between Wings Line and Calico Line at about 8.50am.
Police said the drivers were the sole occupants of the vehicles and the road had now reopened.
Police said they were supporting the families of the victims and a scene examination had been carried out.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Team would carry out an inspection of both vehicles, they said.
In another North Island crash on Tuesday morning, two people died and one was critically injured after a crash between a car and a truck south of Waiouru.
