Power back on in Wellington

19:49 pm on 21 January 2009

Power is back on for all customers in Wellington after a widespread outage.

About 25,000 customers were left without power after a transmission supply problem at the Central Park and Kaiwharawhara substations at 7.45am on Wednesday.

Power was restored to all customers by 9.30am.

Transpower chief executive Patrick Strange said the cause of the outage is still unclear.

The Fire Service said it received at least a dozen calls for help from people stuck in lifts.

Schindlers Lifts says its resources were stretched as it tried to attend to problems spread across the city from Newtown to Ngaio.
