Motiti resident disappointed over Rena funding allocation

A Motiti Island resident says she's disappointed funding given to the island following the grounding of the container ship Rena, has been given as a lump sum and not allocated to specific projects.

Two years ago, the Rena ran aground off the Tauranga coast, spilling hundreds of tonnes of heavy fuel oil onto Bay of Plenty beaches.

The company that chartered the Rena gave a $1 million donation to help with the costs of the spill to local communities and local businesses.

It's been announced $366,000 of the fund will go towards projects on Motiti Island, but a committee will talk to those on the island about where the money would best be spent.

Motiti Island's marae committee secretary Mary Nuku says they applied for $174,000 to help do up the marae after its facilities became rundown from hosting lots of people on the marae during the Rena grounding and clean-up.

She is disappointed that they now have to justify what they're doing to get the money.

Rena Recovery Fund distribution committee member Te Awanuiarangi Black says he can understand there is some disappointment from individual applicants.

He says the distribution committee's decision was to provide for other options in the best interest of the whole community and he is keen to have a korero with those on the island in the next few weeks.
