A person has died after their car collided with a van full of prisoners in Northland this afternoon.

The van was transporting prisoners when it crashed on State Highway 1 at Waiomio.
One person in the van has moderate injuries and others have minor injuries.
The prisoners are being moved to another vehicle and taken to prison.
Traffic diversions are in place and delays are expected.
Police said motorists travelling northbound were advised to take the Mangakahia Rd route.
However, light vehicles could also use the Ruapekapeka Rd detour.
The Serious Crash Unit is on its way to the scene.
