New Commander for Vanuatu paramilitary police force

17:58 pm on 13 September 2010

A new commander has been appointed to Vanuatu's para-military police, the Vanuatu Mobile Force.

Lieutenant colonel Aru Maralau has been appointed after a three year attachment with China's army.

He replaces Willie Vira who will take up the role of deputy Police commissioner after being acting VMF commander since 2004.

The Police Commissioner Joshua Bong says it's time for the VMF to have a permanent commander to maintain order within the force.

Earlier this year, VMF conduct was strongly criticised in a Coroner's report into the death of a prisoner last year following an interrogation by VMF officers.

The report by New Zealand judge, Justice Nevin Dawson, said the VMF placed itself above the law and had a culture of violence.
