Heavy rain is forecast for Taranaki early on Tuesday morning, after the wet weather left parts of the lower North Island flooded on Monday.

MetService was expecting up to 80mm of rain for Mount Taranaki with peak rates of up to 20mm/h and possible thunderstorms.

There was a orange heavy warning in place until 11am on Tuesday for Mount Taranaki.

Streams and rivers could rise rapidly and there could be surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions, said MetService.

There was a heavy rain watch in place for the rest of Taranaki from 4am to 11am on Tuesday.

MetService said there could be periods of heavy rain, with amounts possibly approaching warning criteria.

There was a moderate change of it upgrading into a warning.

Meanwhile, the Tararua Range also had a heavy rain watch in place from 6am to 12pm on Tuesday.

A heavy rain watch was also in place for Buller from 2am until 9am on Tuesday.
