Guam police officers charged over alleged beating of suspect

20:14 pm on 16 March 2009

Nine Guam police officers, a civilian police employee, a police reserve volunteer and an employee of the Department of Youth Affairs have been charged on various charges of assault, theft and official misconduct.

Most of the charges stem from an incident that took place last November when 8 of the officers were either involved in or witnessed an alleged beating of a suspect in police custody.

Guam's Police Chief Paul Suba has emphasised that the investigation which led to the indictments of the officers was initiated by the Guam Police Department and that all of the facts surrounding the allegations against the officers were turned over to the Guam Attorney General's Office.
