Another large slip in Wellington after days of rain

Fresh slips have hit a rain-soaked Wellington region, with one in the suburb of Karori leaving a house perched near the edge of the landslide.

It follows numerous landslides in recent days following heavy rainfall, including a large slip in the central city on Monday.

More than 25 people in eight homes were initally evacuated when the slip came down on The Terrace on Monday. Two households were still out of their homes after the slip swept away a retaining wall and the bank above it.

Long-time resident David McLean lives at one of the two most affected homes, and has no idea when he will be allowed back in.

The slip took out the property's sewerage and water connections and McLean said he was worried about who would fix the services with "mixed messages" about public and private land from the council.

"It's the council land that's slipped and taken out our services, so we'd like them to be fixed very quickly," he told Morning Report.

Wellington City Council spokesperson Richard MacLean said the substantial slip was blocking Woodhouse Avenue but it did not threaten any homes.

Meanwhile, he said work was just beginning to clear the earlier slip on The Terrace.

"There are a couple houses above that slip which are going to be evacuated for the foreseeable future for a number of reasons including the fact that access to the houses has been taken away in the slip," MacLean said.

On the Kāpiti Coast, a slip has brought down a large tree, blocking Paekākāriki Hill Road near the Gray's Road intersection.

A Porirua City Council spokesperson said it was likely to take most of the day to clear.

Meanwhile Wellington City Council hoped to clear a fallen tree today and reopen Seatoun Tunnel, which had to be shut yesterday.

A motorist in the Kāpiti Coast had a lucky escape after they collided with the large tree, temporarily trapping them in their car.

The tree was blocking both sides Paekākāriki Hill Road, near the Grays Road intersection.

A vehicle drove through the cordoned off area and collided with the tree at about 6.30am, police said.

A spokesperson said the driver was uninjured but was initially unable to get out of the vehicle.
