There's been an impasse on the future of the building, which was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

In June, the government tasked a working group with recommending the best way forward for the reinstatement of the cathedral.

Its chair Geoff Dangerfield said the group was looking for for ways to repair, restore and in some parts, rebuild the cathedral.

He said they wanted the cathedral to retain its external appearance as much as possible.

The Working Group has until late November to report back to the government.
