The Chief of the Defence Force says pay rates have not been the main reason behind its personnel leaving.
In September, the Defence Force announced a $45 million pay boost to help bolster staff morale and combat attrition.
Chief of the Defence Force Lieutenant-General Rhys Jones told the Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade select committee that only 54 of some 1800 people that left the services said they were doing so because of pay and allowances.
Lieutenant-General Jones did not disclose the most common reason personnel gave for leaving.
He told MPs the September pay boost was needed because he didn't want remuneration becoming a major factor for driving people out.
