Election 2011

National and Labour prepare for last day of campaign

09:14 am on 25 November 2011

National Party campaign chairperson Steven Joyce predicts the outcome of the election will be closer than people think.

National maintains a strong lead over Labour in the latest polls. In the Herald DigiPoll released on Friday, National is on 50.9% and Labour has 28% support.

Mr Joyce says it's an open question how the smaller parties will fare in the election, and which parties will be in Parliament for post election talks.

He told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme that National wants a strong party vote from its supporters.

Labour's campaign spokesperson, Grant Robertson, said the ACT and United Future parties which supported National in the last Government are in trouble.

He said that, under MMP, it is still possible for Labour to lead the next government.
