In South-Canterbury, Alpine Energy said 329 customers spread throughout the region were still without power, after the weight of snow on power lines caused them to snap.

It said crews would return to fixing lines at first light tomorrow.

In Mid-Canterbury, 155 mostly inland customers were also without electricity due to a mixture of faults and storm damage.
