CNMI's Governor releases money for fuel

11:26 am on 10 June 2010

The Governor of the Northern Marianas has released 1.2 million US dollars to the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation for the immediate purchase of fuel.

Benigno Fitial says the administration will continue to find money for the CUC, which is now directly under the governor's office.

He also says a portion of the 1.2 million dollars will come from the Department of Public Lands.

The CNMI was facing power blackouts after the CUC said earlier in the week that it could not afford to buy fuel to operate the islands' generators.

A state of emergency was declared allowing Governor Fitial to free up funds to meet the crisis.
