Kick Out The Jams: Hex

08:33 am on 12 February 2016

Interviews and live sets from the New Zealand music underground. This week, we check in with Wellington band Hex.

Wellington three-piece Hex are Liz Mathews on drums, GG Van Newtown on guitar and Kiki Van Newtown on bass. Describing themselves as “brutally feminist”, Hex splices heavy riffing proto-metal with dark folk melodies in songs that summon the power of feminine energy.

First appearing in 2013 with the single release 'Witches of the Hex', the band had been on hiatus for a couple of years while GG and Kiki brought some tamariki into the world. Three years later, Hex have re-emerged from their base in the Wellington suburb of Naenae with new material from a forthcoming album due out later this year.
