Fiji unionists have meeting disbanded

09:12 am on 15 August 2011

Fiji's interim government says Fiji Trade Union Congress members who were disbanded from a meeting on Saturday were trying to get international attention.

FBC News reports the regime's spokesperson Sharon Smith-Johns says ministry police stopped the gathering as the union did not have a permit to hold the meeting as required under the Public Emergency Regulation.

She says the actions of the unionists were intentional, and that to hold a meeting without a permit looks malicious because the ILO was in the country.
