Vanuatu Opposition wants Natapei to go over MSG cancellation

19:43 pm on 26 July 2010

The leader of the opposition in Vanuatu is calling on Prime Minister Edward Natapei to resign because of his cancellation of the Melanesian Spearhead Group Summit.

Maxime Carlot Korman told the Vanuatu Daily Post he believes the meeting was put off in the interests of foreign countries, and makes a mockery of the MSG's procedures.

He says Melanesian leaders will no longer trust Vanuatu as a true leading member of the Spearhead Group.

But government public relations officer, George Tarimanu told the paper the MSG required there to be a consensus on who would be the next chair of the leaders summit.

He says in this case there was no consensus.
