Fiji is to invite the former governor of California, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, to visit Fiji in October for a meeting ahead of the COP 23 climate summit in Bonn.

Fiji is to co-chair the Bonn meeting.

Mr Schwarzenegger shares concerns on climate change and has challenged US President Donald Trump on this.

The Fiji Sun reported that Fiji's prime minister Frank Bainimarama had briefed the leaders of the Pacific Small Island Developing States about preparations for the COP 23, during which he informed them of the invitation.

The prime minister said he would invite California governor Jerry Brown and his predecessor Mr Schwarzenegger to come to the pre-COP gathering in Fiji in October, when he hoped they would join the Pacific in a gesture of solidarity.

Mr Bainimarama told the meeting he wanted all Pacific leaders by his side leading up to Bonn.

He says "This is not just about Frank or about Fiji but every Pacific leader, every Pacific nation, every civil society group, every private sector body, everyone who represents the ordinary men, women and children in the Pacific".
