Panel confirms predicted sea level rise

16:07 pm on 20 July 2015

An independent panel looking at planning changes in Christchurch has backed a prediction that sea levels will rise by about one metre in the next 100 years, because of climate change.

The panel has been hearing submissions on the Replacement District Plan for months, including one from the Government saying the prediction of a one-metre rise is at the high end.

Today, the panel has disagreed with that, saying it is more of a mid-range projection.

The natural hazards chapter of the plan signed off by the panel dictates where building can take place and the height new dwellings need to be to avoid the risk of flooding.

If no appeals are lodged within 20 working days, the rules will come into effect.
