American Samoa teacher's strike said to have had little impact

11:32 am on 11 October 2007

American Samoa's Director of Education Dr. Claire Poumele says classroom instruction was not affected by yesterday's teachers' strike.

Dr. Poumele says the school with the largest number of teachers out was Tafuna High School with seven teachers absent.

She says personnel from the DOE main office and Office of Curriculum and Instruction filled in as teachers for the day.

Other substitute teachers were at Fagaitua High school and Polytech .

By the DOE Director's count only 18 teachers participated in the strike.

The strike organizer Ben Te'o said that their count was 57.

Dr. Poumele says the only action DOE is taking is docking the pay of the teachers who went on strike.
