Fiji water supply gradually restored

14:42 pm on 25 October 2006

Fiji's Water and Sewerage department says it hopes to restore full water services to the Suva-Nausori corridor in the next few days.

Tens of thousands of people living in and around the capital have been without piped water for at least two days after a workman disrupted a main water pipeline.

Many schools have not opened, and some factories and food outlets are unable to operate.

The acting director of the Water and Sewerage department, Paula Wilisoni says staff are working overtime to try restore services, and some areas may get water this afternoon.

However, he says in other areas it may take a few days for the problem to be fixed.

"Of course it will come back in phases because there are procedures to be followed and they will take some time."
