Police said they were closing roads in the central Hamilton suburb of Frankton about 10am this morning after a suspicious package was found.

A 100m radius was set up around Commerce Street, and people were asked to avoid the area or to obey any instructions given to them by emergency services if they were already in the area.

By noon today police were able to make the package safe with Defence Force help, a police communications release said.

"Police staff remain in the immediate area making further inquiries into the package."
