Pacific Islands Forum fishing ministers meet in group for first time

10:20 am on 10 June 2005

Pacific Islands Forum fishing ministers have met as a group for the first time, and revamped the structure of the Forum Fisheries Agency.

Ministers yesterday voted in the Marshall Islands to revise the structure of the organisation and increase its annual operating budget by 50 per-cent.

Our correspondent in the Marshall Islands capital, Majuro, Giff Johnson, says fisheries ministers agreed to meet annually from now on.

"The director of the FFA, Feleti Teo, had made the point that all these plans to revamp the organisation and to really have it serve member's interests in a much greater way would be for nought if they didn't get resources to do it. And it looks like the ministers have really come to the table in meeting the FFA's needs and giving it a strong voice of confidence."
