Sporting codes in the Cook Islands are unhappy that the country's only indoor sports stadium is about to become unavailable for the foreseeable future.

The Bluesky Sports Arena on Rarotonga will undergo a major five month upgrade next year.

The Police department is then expected to relocate into the arena towards the end of 2018, while its own national headquarters undergoes renovation.

At least seven sporting codes in the Cook Islands will be affected by the move, along with the national high school, and left unable to use a key sporting facility.

The Cook Islands Investment Corporation which owns and manages all government properties, this week signed off on the building renovations with the Chinese government, who will be funding the upgrades.

But sports codes and parents aren't happy that the national stadium will be unavailable for such a long time, arguing the Police should be moved into the Parliament building because it is hardly ever used.
